Heath Ledger was talented wasn't he?  He will be missed.  My brother made an attempt to see the movie tonight to no avail (have you ever seen a grown man cry.... not pretty dude Disappointed).  The movie has sold out until the 10 o'clock showing on Monday morning, and the funny thing is that he bought it for him and his buddies.  I have never seen the man wake up before noon, so that alone will be worth watching.Open-mouthed

Hi Choc, I am going to see Batman, but probably in a few weeks when it's died down a little.  I hate a full theater because of the temptation to kill a nuckleheaded teenager.  That new series you mention on HBO, I haven't seen any advertisement for it yet on the HBO channels... thanks for the link BTW.

Overzealousness of megan's law

7/20/2008

Just reading this article from the NYT on how a appeals court in new jersey overturned some local municipalities strengthening of the Megan Law, which was originally enacted to allow law enforcement to notify the public about registered sex offenders.  The problem is that municipalities in New Jersey had in place laws that prevented sex offenders from living within about 2,500 feet of schools and playgrounds. Though each county in the state had also included other places such as pools or bus stops.

My problem with the law is with its proximity restrictions and how certain municipalities have gone overboard in making them.  As a person with nieces, nephews, and little cousins and who works in the field of education myself, I want nothing more than to protect our children. But that where the problem is, our children, children of color are not being protected because overzealous proponents of this law have gotten it so twisted. I noticed the proponents of this law when interviewed on TV are overwhelmingly white.
If these sex offender don't live in your town, then where can they live? You know the answer to that question as well as I. It is towns where there are is a large population of people of color that becoming the dumping grounds for sex offenders because the well to do, affluent towns have enacted laws like those towns in NJ where they make it impossible for a sex offender to even set foot in their town.  Where do you expect them to live on the ocean or in some other unrealistic far out place? They have to live some where.  No place is truly safe for children I don't care how many sex offenders you try to expel.
This madness has to stop. It is bad enough that children of color in the country are neglected.  White, affluent town's safety should not come at the expense of our towns become dumping grounds for sex offenders.  I am fine with the original definition of Megan's Law (to notify the public of sex offenders and other measures) but proximity stipulation of the law as it has been enacted by local municipalities is flawed.

Sanaa &Nia join cast of Family guy spin-off 'Cleveland'

7/18/2008
Oh man, I can't wait for this show to come on Fox, now that my two chocolate queens, Sanaa Lathan and Nia Long are going to be a part of it.  Sanaa be the voice of Donna, Cleveland's wife and Nia will be the voice of thee step daughter, Roberta. I sense Nia is going to give the character some 'tude if I remember her previous roles correctly.  I had no idea that Cleveland was voiced by a white guy (pictured below between Long and Lathan), named Mike Henry. Oh, well I don't care because Cleveland is still funny.  The show is set to debut in 2009.  I'll be watching along with my other favorite, Family Guy.

New AKA Barbie doll: representative of the spectrum?

7/18/2008
Alpha Kappa Alpha (also called AKA) is really hitting the news this week, first with the invitation of Michelle Obama to be an honorary member  and now with the introduction of their new doll from Mattel to celebrate their centennial year. I just realized that they are having a currently having several events in D.C. to celebrate their centennial year,  so these events are not just coincidence.
Anyway the issue at hand is this doll (see below) introduced by mattel.  It is the AKA Barbie doll and from first glance I can already tell what is wrong with this doll.  Why does she have to look so light? Let me rephrase that,  as their is nothing wrong with a light skinned women but where are the other shades of the spectrum that being an AKA is supposed to represent.  I know of the myths or tales of the AKA back in the day using the paper bag test  in induct members but I went to undergraduate school and I remember seeing AKAs of all sort of shades from light to dark. Why isn't that represented in this doll. Instead of just having just one doll represent the spectrum of the members of AKA why not introduce a set of dolls with a varying degree of shades showing the full spectrum of women of color who are members of this sorority?  Maybe the cost make other dolls is a factor and as we all know that these are some hard times for companies but I don't like how this one doll may be percieved.  It also doesn't help the image of AKA who many have considered to be superficial and made up of mostly light skinned women.  This is the perception that they have had to deal with over their 100 year history and I don't think the introduction of this doll is going change that perception of their organization any time soon.

The Root: Lay Off Soror Barbie!

you gots to be kidding...'dark butts'?!?

7/18/2008
I will be honest I don't really follow the rap scene that much nowadays but I felt compelled to talk about one of its rising young stars after I recently stumbled upon this story of rapper, Christian Ward, who goes by the stage name, Yung Berg, outrageous comments during an interview on a radio program talking about he doesn't like "dark butts".  Yung Berg basically is saying he doesn't like women with a "dark butt" or basically dark skin tone (click here for an audio of the interview).  I had to ask myself what is it with these so called brothers hating on our women with dark skin tones?  I mean we see it everyday but especially in the media.  Look at the music videos of these hiphop/r&b artists and more than likely it is going to be women of light skin tones prancing around in thongs and bikinis but hardly ever any dark skin tone women. Don't get me wrong these videos are demeaning to women any way by they are heavily biased towards light skin (some would say almost white) looking women.  What I found most troubling about his comments was the fact that it has been said his mother is dark skinned. So you mean to tell me when he referred to these so called "dark butts" he is also referring to his mother? He must be.  I will say he has since apologized but in my opinion the damage has been done.
Yung Berg is not alone in his sentiments on dark skin women.  I also found another article that talks about how R&B artist Bobby Valentino was quoted awhile back as stating he prefers light skinned women because they "give it up" faster than dark skin women.  Um,  any woman with respect for herself will not give it up so easily and it has nothing to do with skin tone. How did these two, I want to say men but they seem like boys to me with the crap coming out of their mouths, get things so twisted about our women? We did we go wrong as a community to be raising men with such biased views on the women in their own race?

I am tired of these artists like Berg and Valentino spreading their ignorance like the plague.  I feel this is a cycle because these very same artists feature light skin women only in their videos and then the young ones that see that crap grow up indoctrinated with the idea that a girl has to be light skinned with euro centric features in order to be considered "beautiful".  I am sick of it as we all should be.  The question is how do we change these attitudes so that all women of color and shades are looked at as being beautiful?
