'vibe' is no more Due to the current the recession, the sixteen year old magazine has ceased publication as of June 30, 2009. They had planned an MJ tribute issue for the next cover but that ain't gonna happen now. Editor-in-chief Danyel Smith released this statement: On behalf the Vibe content staff (the best in this business), it is with
great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We
were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a
tragic week in overall, but as the doors of Vibe Media Group close, on the eve
of the magazine's sixteenth anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop
in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who
continue to love the Vibe brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy,
pride and excellence, and we will miss you. Oh well. I knew Vibe was losing readers and subscribers for a while. I was one of them though I ceased being a subscriber several years ago. When I was in college at wnec, I decided to use my hard earned workstudy money to order me a year's subscription to the magazine co-founded by the legendary Quincy Jones (it was since sold to another party back in 2006). Anyway I still have covers from the years 1997-98 and those include the Notorious B.I.G. cover after his death in Mar 97. Back then I would read articles by a writer by the name of Bonz Malone who was very insightful in his viewpoint of the hip-hop and urban landscape. I do see their online version still seems to continuing or maybe in time that too will fold. Who knows in this economic climate. Vibe's last issue ![]() Source: MSN news Comments (6)
