    American Beauty

I wanted to comment on two issues with American Beauty and it affects on black beauty: black hair and Euro-Centric body fantasy.
Chris Rock's new black hair documentary trailer, "Good Hair" on a recent episode of the Black Enterprise show "Our World" and it was about of course the stigma of black hair.   What is good hair? I ask this because recently I was at the library one day and minding my own business and then I looked up and out the the window of the room I saw a girl pass by and upon looking at her I focused on her hair and I said to myself , wow she has good hair.  Why did I say that?  I am conditioned to think that way? The type of hair she had was that straight long almost halfway down the back kind.   I am puzzled buy my observation because I seem to be aware of the difference between nappy, natural grown kind and the processed, relaxed, straight kind that black women seem to spend a fortune one at their sacred beauty salons.  For a while I know I used to think straight hair was a wonderful thing, but I know from observations of female members of my family how chemically dangerous it can be.  I know there is a history of it dating back to us trying to fit into society, trying to be white but I am just curious as to why I think like that?

    On the Euro-Centric Body fantasy:
    Would you find this attractive?

Apparently this image was photoshopped but it was an actual ad run by the designer Ralph Lauren in a mall in Japan.  Sickening is what comes to mind when I look at this picture.  Yet the model in it was cut by Lauren because she couldn't fit into any of his samples, in others words they are saying she was "too fat".  So again from the hair to body image, this eurocentric way of beauty to me is something that does more harm than good.  What ever happened to healthy weight or was that ever the case?

    Ms. L,
As you and others have said and I agree that one's hair only needs to be healthy for it to be considered good hair. I had to catch myself when I saw that girl and her hair and just think about why I think like that. I am still a work in progress but as you stated, at least some of us are realizing that what looks "good' may not be at all.

I wish I could have been inside your head when you came to the realization that the phrase "good hair" slipped through your lips! I'll bet that was a moment of total analysis and mulling over and everything else investigative.

On the real though, the phrase "good hair" is dated -- originated probably back in the days of slavery. We all know the stories of families where some have more natural hair and others have the "good hair". Don't know if there is any getting away from the origin of the phrase but, at least, more of us realize that ...

Healthy hair is "Good hair". Better yet, just having hair at all is "good hair" because as we age, it thins out. I don't have half the hair I used to have. It is now as long as I wanted it way back then (hangs down past my shoulders), BUT it is oh so thin now.

    So go figure.

I agree abouthe good hair comment but black in this society have been lead to believe that good hair should be a straight and long and i guess shiny. It is taking a while for some of us to unlearn that image of what good hair actually is.
    Iris,
I no problem with skinny or fat or big boned or what ever you like to call it. I think everyone should have a healthy weight and as long as you are happy then forget what everyone else thinks.

    Styln,
I didn't know it [digital manipulation] was so widespread as it is. The industry is hurting itself because not everyone lived under a camera 24/7, Know wonder when you look at photos of some of these folks with out the help of the camera they look so...different.

    Fay,
Yeah, well some of us (present company included) have noticed that they are losing theirs so....oh well try to keep it cut low, ya know...Also I stopped now (mostly) but I used to alway check for black females and their straight, shiny hair...now I know why but man talk about being programmed.

    Cherish,
I remember that Dove is running that project to try to reshape the image of beauty among young girls. They need it because these girls in the magazine make beauty seem so unattainable. What a shame.

I totally agree with Styln on this one... "good" or "bad", everyone always has that wish that there hair were more ___ (fill in the blanks). .. I love long straight hair, wild curly hair, thick nappy fros and beautiful locks all the same... if you got it, rock it. The "good" comes in the confidence and beauty people see when you walk by with your fresh do'! Dove released this ad that I saw on Facebook last week - totally awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U

My opinion is that as long as you've got hair, you've got good hair! There are lots of folks who just can't grow hair due to different circumstances - we al got good hair cause we could grown the damn thing.

I guess we are all guilty of saying someone has "good" hair when we see it's long and curly or straight. Nappy roots were never considered "good" hair, hence the hustle to apply chemicals. Today, that don't matter - if you can't grow it, sew it!!

All hair is good hair. One day I met Stevie Wonder and he felt my hair. I was wearing natural, no chemicals and no press. It was my natural waves and curls. He said to me, you've got that good hair. And I said to him, all hair is good hair and I began to touch and play with his dread locks. I told him how beautiful his hair was (he had pencil thin, soft and perfect locks. Blacks have a broad variety of hair textures, we should be proud of our locks no matter how they are formed.

As for the Ralph Lauren controversy, the photo looks really bad! Her head looks way too big for her body and she looks like a paper doll (not real). All I can say is, "that's fashion for you". Contrived images that contribute to the low self-esteem of women all over the world. This reminds me of when they used 12 to 16 year olds on the covers, in ads and fashion editorals in top (adult) fashion magizines back in the late eighties and early nineties. Hopefully, this controversy will help to stop the Photoshop tampering in fashion editorials and advertising.

What is good hair? To me good hair is hair that is healthy; Hair that is not thin or falling out or hair that doesn't have split ends. I don't care whether your hair is straight or kinky, if it's not healthy it's not good hair.

The popularity of skinny girls is slowly on the decline. People have become weary of seeing girls that are so skinny that they look unhealthy. They want to see girls with a little more meat on their bones. That picture above is just ridiculous.

I think it's very creepy and very unnatural. They did a terrible job. Her head looks wider than her whole body. Whomever photoshopped that picture needs to be fired.
